Summary :
The word “Japonism” appeared in the1870’s to define the massive influence of Japan upon art and the artists of the time: the use of iconographic and ornamental models, the appropriation of singular formats, the renewal of ornamental art exemplify this influence. One after the others, the impressionists, the symbolists, the nabis, all looking for new solution, were influenced by Japanese art. This film, shot in France and Japan, recounts the different stages of particularly fructuous meeting of two civilizations through the masterpieces of the musée d’Orsay.
