Summary :
A dance at the Moulins de la Butte Montmartre, a happy crowd on a Sunday of Summer 1876. Renoir did not need more than that to make his painting a manifesto of the new impressionist painting. But this work is not only a symphony of blues, as the critics of the time underlined with contempt. Deciphering it is difficult at first, but it leads to a lot of discoveries. The painting is more skilful than it looks: Renoir used a range of pigments, close to each others, but resulting in a series of very rich shades, a skilful merging of strokes, he blurred the traditional perspectives, mingled shapes in a complex way, and arranged bodies and looks in an original manner.
