Les produits manufacturés sont des idées matérialisées. VAT, créé à partir de centaines d’objets réels, symbolise un renversement de ce concept : les artefacts émergent du chao originel pour prendre leur forme idéale. Les objets pivotent continuellement (comme une caméra qui tourne autour de ce qu’elle filme) et s’ouvrent pour laisser apparaître de nouveaux espaces, tandis que des formes improbables apparaissent les uns après les autres. Pour la bande sonore, un enregistrement de l’océan a été simplement diffusé entre les cordes d’un piano. Le résultat a été utilisé pour stimuler systématiquement la corde du piano, produisant une variété de tons et de colorations sonores exotiques. L'œuvre de Van McElwee comprend plus de trente mono bandes ou installations et il a reçu pour celles-ci de nombreuses bourses et de plusieurs prix; parmi ceux-ci, citons l'American Film Institute Independent Filmmaker Award, le prix du National Endowent for the Arts Independent Production Fund (sept nominations) ainsi qu'une bourse de voyage accordée par le gouvernement indien. L'œuvre de Mc Elwee a été largement exposée dans le monde entier et elle est représentée par The Kitchen à New York, la Galerie Trabant à Vienne, Heure Exquise! Distribution en France, The Lux Center au Royaume Uni, ainsi que par the Inter Media Art Institute en Allemagne. McElwee est professeur de médias ainsi que directeur du département vidéo à la Webster's University School of Communications située à St. Louis, USA.
Manufactured items are ideas materialized. VAT, created from hundred of acual objects performs a reversal: the artifacts emerge from a primal chaos into their ideal forms. The objects rotate continuously (the equivalent of an arcing camera), opening to reveal new spaces; as level upon level of impossible forms unfold. For the soundtrack, a recording of the ocean was literally played through all the strings of baby grand piano. The results wer used to excite the piano's string again and again, producing a variety of exotic tones and colorations. Van McElwee's body of video work includes over sixty single channel pieces, installations and web projects. Grants and awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship,The American Film Institute Independent Filmmaker Award, The National Endowment for the Arts Independent Production Fund (seven time recipient), and a travel grant from the Government of India. McElwee’s work has been exhibited extensively worldwide and is represented by The Kitchen in New York, Heure Exquise! in France, LUX in the UK, the Inter Media Art Institute in Germany, Bruno David Gallery in St. Louis and Trabant Gallery in Austria. McElwee is Professor of Electronic and Photographic Media at Webster University in St. Louis.
