Ce dispositif permet au mouvement d'une hélice d'être vu au moins de trois façons: comme deux lignes d'hélices se déplaçant l'une à travers l'autre, comme une hélice d'hélices ascendante, et comme une seule hélice traçant une infinité de symboles à travers l'image.
L'œuvre de Van McElwee comprend plus de trente mono bandes ou installations et il a reçu pour celles-ci de nombreuses bourses et de plusieurs prix; parmi ceux-ci, citons l'American Film Institute Independent Filmmaker Award, le prix du National Endowent for the Arts Independent Production Fund (sept nominations) ainsi qu'une bourse de voyage accordée par le gouvernement indien. A hypothetical film loop rotated 180 degrees before splicing repeats time and reverses space with each repetition through a film projector. This device allows the movement of a propeller to be seen in at least three ways: as two lines of propellers moving through one another, as an ascending helix of propellers, and as a single propeller tracing an infinity symbol through the frame.
VAN McELWEE’s body of video work includes over forty single channel pieces and installations. Grants and awards include The American Film Institute Independent Filmmaker Award, The National Endowment for the Arts Independent Production Fund (seven time recipient), and a travel grant from the Government of India. McElwee’s work is exhibited extensively worldwide and is represented by The Kitchen in New York, Trabant Gallery in Austria, Heure Exquise! in France, and the Inter Media Art Institute in Germany. Van McElwee is Professor of Electronic and Photographic Media at Webster University in St. Louis.
