L'Atomium fut construit pour l'Exposition Universelle de Bruxelles en 1958 comme un emblème futuriste du progrès scientifique. Ce monument gigantesque représente la structure de l'atome des cristaux de fer, grossie cent soixante-cinq milliards de fois. Dans FOURTH AXIS, les mouvements de caméra à l'intérieur de la structure même du monument font progressivement apparaître un squelette externe virtuel, positionnant ainsi les éléments tridimensionnels de l'Atomium dans un alignement avec un quatrième vecteur.
L'œuvre de Van McElwee comprend plus de trente mono bandes ou installations et il a reçu pour celles-ci de nombreuses bourses et de plusieurs prix; parmi ceux-ci, citons l'American Film Institute Independent Filmmaker Award, le prix du National Endowent for the Arts Independent Production Fund (sept nominations) ainsi qu'une bourse de voyage accordée par le gouvernement indien. L'œuvre de Mc Elwee a été largement exposée dans le monde entier et elle est représentée par The Kitchen à New York, la Galerie Trabant à Vienne, Heure Exquise! Distribution en France, The Lux Center au Royaume Uni, ainsi que par the Inter Media Art Institute en Allemagne. McElwee est professeur de médias ainsi que directeur du département vidéo à la Webster's University School of Communications située à St. Louis, USA.
The Atomium was built for the Brussels Expo in 1958 as a futuristic emblem of scientific progress. This gigantic monument represents an atomic lattice of iron crystals, magnified one hundred sixty-five billion times. In FOURTH AXIS, camera moves inside the actual structure cause a virtual external skeleton to grow, bringing the Atomium's three-dimensional elements into a new alignment along a fourth vector.

Grants and awards include The American Film Institute Independent Filmmaker Award, The National Endowment for the Arts Independent Production Fund (seven time recipient), and a travel grant from the Government of India. McElwee’s work is exhibited extensively worldwide and is represented by The Kitchen in New York, Trabant Gallery in Austria, Heure Exquise! in France, and the Inter Media Art Institute in Germany. Van McElwee is Professor of Electronic and Photographic Media at Webster University in St. Louis.
