CONFLUENCE applique une partition de montage complexe à des images et des sons collectés en déplaçant une caméra vidéo à travers différents endroits envahis par la foule. Parmi ces scènes, on trouve un marché au Caire, un carnaval à Saint Louis dans le Missouri, les trains de banlieue de Tokyo aux heures de pointe et un enterrement à Varanasi. Le principe de montage unique de CONFLUENCE tisse ensemble ces flux de mouvement comme des notes sur une partition musicale. Les événements sont arrachés à leur écoulement normal et réorganisés en conglomérats autonomes. Il en résulte une transformation du monde enregistré et de sa projection dans une nouvelle matrice temporelle. Le tunnel du temps devient poreux, il s'étoile en une infinité de passages et de sorties de secours. L'œuvre de Van McElwee comprend plus de trente mono bandes ou installations et il a reçu pour celles-ci de nombreuses bourses et de plusieurs prix; parmi ceux-ci, citons l'American Film Institute Independent Filmmaker Award, le prix du National Endowent for the Arts Independent Production Fund (sept nominations) ainsi qu'une bourse de voyage accordée par le gouvernement indien. L'œuvre de Mc Elwee a été largement exposée dans le monde entier et elle est représentée par The Kitchen à New York, la Galerie Trabant à Vienne, Heure Exquise! Distribution en France, The Lux Center au Royaume Uni, ainsi que par the Inter Media Art Institute en Allemagne. CONFLUENCE applies a complex editing score to images and sounds gathered by a video camera moving through crowded places. Among these scenes are a market in Cairo, a carnival in St. Louis, commuters in Tokyo, and a funeral in Varanasi. The unique edit-form of CONFLUENCE weaves these streams of movement together like notes in a musical score. Events are broken loose from their normal flow and are organized into autonomous clusters. The result is a transformation of the recorded world and its projection into a new temporal matrix. The tunnel of time becomes porous; crisscrossed by passageways and escape routes. CONFLUENCE is also designed as an installation. VAN McELWEE’s body of video work includes over forty single channel pieces and installations. Grants and awards include The American Film Institute Independent Filmmaker Award, The National Endowment for the Arts Independent Production Fund (seven time recipient), and a travel grant from the Government of India. McElwee’s work is exhibited extensively worldwide and is represented by The Kitchen in New York, Trabant Gallery in Austria, Heure Exquise! in France, and the Inter Media Art Institute in Germany. Van McElwee is Professor of Electronic and Photographic Media at Webster University in St. Louis.
