Une équipe d'archéologues français du musée du Louvre découvre au Soudan les vestiges d'une cité royale égypto-africaine, ensevelie sous le sable. Une découverte qui témoigne d'une civilisation beaucoup plus urbaine que ce que l'on pensait jusque là. A 200 kilomètres au nord de Khartoum, collée aux berges du Nil, une étroite bande de terre fertile, cernée par le désert. Il y a deux mille ans se trouvait ici l'une des villes du royaume de Méroé, un royaume nubien fortement influencé par l'Egypte, mais en même temps totalement enraciné en Afrique. De ce royaume on connaît les grandes nécropoles et leurs magnifiques pyramides à gradins. On sait aussi que les rois de Méroé continuaient à vouloir porter le titre de « Pharaons de la Haute et de la Basse Egypte », ce qu'ils n'étaient nullement et qu'ils adoraient les dieux du panthéon égyptien. Mais sur leurs vêtements, leurs bijoux, leurs traits tels qu'on les voit sur les bas reliefs sont typiquement africains. Pour le reste on ne sait pas grand chose. L'histoire de Méroé reste à écrire, sa culture à découvrir, sa langue à déchiffrer. La grande ville enfouie sous les sables de Mouweis, sera peut-être une des clés de compréhension de ce royaume africain.
A team of French archaeologists of the Louvre Museum discover in Sudan some remains of an Egyptian-African royal city, buried under the sand. A discovery that witnesses a civilization much more urban than what we previously thought. At 200 km north of Khartoum, glued to the banks of the Nile, a narrow strip of fertile land, surrounded by the desert. Two thousand years ago was here one of the cities of the kingdom of Meroe, a Nubian kingdom heavily influenced by Egypt, but at the same time totally rooted in Africa. Of this kingdom are known the great necropolis and their magnificent stepped pyramids. We also know that the kings of Meroe still wanted to keep the title of "Pharaohs of Upper and Lower Egypt", what they were absolutely not and that they worshiped the gods of the Egyptian pantheon. But on their clothing, jewelry, their features, as viewed on the bas-reliefs, are typically African. For the rest, we do not know much. The history of Meroe is still to be written, its culture to be discovered, its language to be deciphered. The great city, buried under the sands of Mouweis, may be one of the keys for the understanding of this African kingdom.
