Samaille Mathieu

director, videographer

Mathieu Samaille was trained in literature, dramatic arts and digital arts. He lived in Montpellier, London and Paris, before settling in Montreal and obtaining dual French and Canadian nationality.Since 2018, he has been creating video-poems, i.e. poetry in several dimensions, which probes the contrasts of our inner self through sensory effects between text, sound and image. In his ontological approach, the form reveals the substance.Mathieu received the Grand-Prix for Video-Poetry at the Montreal Poetry Festival in 2019. Since then, his work has been screened in many international festivals. With the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, he presented his first individual installation at the Phénomena festival in Montreal in October 2022. A copy of his video-poem, Madame Jarrar, was acquired for study by the "Art, Film and Visual Studies" department of Harvard University.
