Summary :
It is following a controversy around the pictorial representations of the time of the galloping horse – are the four hooves suspended at the same time at a given moment or not? - that Eadweard Muybridge develops a photographic device, foolish for the time. The latter, and even though the best operators still need at least 15 seconds of pause time per shot, allows him a succession of ultra-fast shots and therefore a decomposition of the movement such as no human eye had never seen.
 
Blending intimately science and art - so much so that it was debated at the end of the 19th century - the images of Eadweard Muybridge strike today by their great beauty and what they prefigure with a few years ahead: the cinema, from Greek κίνημα / kínēma, which means movement as everyone knows.

Ado Kyrou says in substance in Le Surréalisme au cinema that the duty and the virtue of the latter are to show men what they have never seen before.

Deconstructing the movement, Eadweard Muybridge, this great "disturbed" precursor, as what was said of him - in other words, a victim of a spirit in perpetual motion - recomposed that of life and time and was the first to show it to the world.

We can not better deal with the history of the cinematography than by revisiting, between tribute, reconstruction, recurrence and fragmentation, the visions of this great pioneer that was Eadweard Muybridge, through the unforgettable images that the magic lantern has been given us since.
