Summary :
At the end of the 19th century, Brussels became the capital of modern architecture for a decade. The art nouveau movement, breaking with the academic tradition as well as with the neo-gothic trend, introduced new bases for a new conception of architecture and its role. Victor Horta (1861-1947) was the movement’s great leader. The townhouse he built between 1895 and 1897 for Baron Edmond van Eetvelde is out of all his works the one that shows most clearly his modernity.
